American Road Trip: New Orleans

Have you ever taken a bite and felt transferred to another place or time? This month, we’re taking you on an “American Road Trip” with us to experience destinations around the country via our menu and your taste buds. We’ll add some road trip games and highlight the must-see sights along the way.  Our first destination? New Orleans. The tunes, the cuisine, the culture – take in the flavor of the famed city as we take you on a tour below.

Sights to See

  • French Quarter. Filled with history and great stories, the best way to walk the French Quarter is to join a small tour group.
  • Live music. New Orleans is filled with music wherever you walk but we found some of our favorite performers along Frenchman Street.
  • Jackson Square. Try visiting the square in the evening, cooler temps and lots of lights make it an impressive sight.
  • The Garden District. Consider hopping on one of the historic trollies to see the beautiful homes in this part of town.

Things to Eat

  • Jambalaya. According to tales, Jambalya was invented in New Orleans at an inn by a man named Jean. Jean was told to “balayez” (or “throw something together”) for a weary traveler. What he made up later became known as Jambalaya. Whether the story is true or not, we love this spicy dish so much that we had to share our interpretation with you!  Our “New Orleans Jambalaya” is available all month long at Souplantation & Sweet Tomatoes – be sure you stop in and try some!
  • Pralines. You’ll fall in love with these delectable treats! We decided to bring our version of New Orleans pralines back to our restaurants in the form of our French Quarter Praline Muffins (ONLY available until May 14th).
  • Seafood. From crawfish to shrimp to cat fish – New Orleans has a great variety of seafood options.
  • Beignets. Possibly one of the most iconic foods of New Orleans is the Beignets. In fact, our fans on Facebook told us that these powdered sugar-topped treats with a cup of café au lait are the top must-eat items while visiting.

Did we miss anything we will need to hit during our next visit to New Orleans? Take a look are our full May menu here for more.

  1. I AM FROM THE NEW ORLEANS AREA YOUR PRALINE MUFFINS ARE SOOOOOOO GOOD,COULD YOU HAVE THEM MORE OFTEN AT THE SANDY, UTAH SWEET TOMATOES, THEN MAYBE YOU COULD PUT A SWEET TOMATOES IN OREM,UTAH ….
IN MARCH, THERE WAS A SALAD WITH SPINACH AND MANDERINE ORANGES, IS THERE ANY WAY THAT I COULD GET THE RECIPE FOR THAT SALAD, THE DRESSING WAS WOW GREAT, IT IS SECOND BEST TO THE STRAWBERRY SPINACH SALAD AND DRESSING, THAT RECIPE WOULD BE A GREAT ONE TO HAVE TOO. DRIVING 30+ MILES EACH WAY TO GO THERE AT LEAST 2-3 TIMES A MONTH IS WORTH IT.
    THANK YOU, RUTH ST GERMAIN

    1. Hi Ruth – Thank you so much for liking our French Quarter Praline Muffins! We actually have shared our Mandarin Spinach with Caramelized Walnuts recipe – let us know how you enjoy it if you try to make it!

  2. Hi,
I’m a vegetarian, and Sweet Tomatoes is my favorite place to dine! We end up eating there atleast once a week! I loved the American Road Trip menu, and I am also looking forward to the Berry Month – especially the Strawberry Fields Salad – I tried out the recipe on your blog, and it turned out great!! Just like at the restaurant!
In the American Road Trip menu, I really liked the Spicy Southwestern Pasta Salad. Could you share the recipe to that? I really loved it but its no longer available now that it’s Berry month. Also, it would be great if you could offer more choices for vegetarians in the signature deli salads/prepared salad section. 🙂 Just a suggestion!!
    Thanks!

    1. Hi! We’re so glad you tried one of our recipes and loved it. We do occasionally post some of our recipes, however, we don’t post everything so stay tuned to see what comes up next! We will also pass along your suggestion to our Culinary Team.
